FAIRTRADE IN LUDLOW

Ludlow has been a Fair Trade town since November 2003 in recognition of the widespread availability and use of Fair Trade products, and the work which has been ongoing for several years.

The application for recognition was made by the Fairtrade and Human Rights Group of Ludlow 21, which is part of the Agenda 21 movement that grew out of the 1992 Earth Summit on sustainable development.

  • By 2003 Ludlow had an active group promoting Fairtrade;
  • shops and cafes were stocking Fairtrade certified goods;
  • Churches had regular Fairtrade sales; Ludlow School was interested and Fairtrade Fortnight in March was supported by several organisations including the Assembly Rooms, the Library and the Tourist Information Centre.

In June 2003 the Town Council passed a resolution pledging its support for Fairtrade which allowed us to apply to the Fairtrade Foundation and be granted Fairtrade Town status.

What is Fairtrade?

  • A fair minimum price for producers
  • No forced labour, child or adult
  • Fair wages and working conditions
  • The right to join trade unions
  • A long term trading commitment without harming the environment
  • A fair price plus a premium payment to be invested for community development projects

There is still work to be done and we would welcome new willing supporters to help, e.g.

  • mount displays during Fairtrade fortnight in various venues in the town
  • man Fairtrade stalls at various markets and events during the year
  • distribute leaflets and documents

Contact Ann Butterfield, email , if you have an interest in helping promote Fairtrade in this way.
