As County Surveyor for Shropshire from 1787 till his death in 1834, this illustrated talk by David de Haan will look at the career of the eminent civil engineer, Thomas Telford, the first man to provide detailed specifications and costings for the many contracts he managed. David de Haan began his museum career in 1970 at the Science Museum, London, and until his retirement in 2012 he was Programme Director of the Ironbridge Institute. He still advises English Heritage on historical aspects of the Iron Bridge and he is the Secretary of the Association for Industrial Archaeology.
