The title is a quote from the most important of Japanís early Tea masters, Sen no RikyŻ. It describes the atmosphere he hoped would pervade the setting he created for his Tea ceremony in the late 16th century, an art that has remained at the heart of Japanís artistic and aesthetic identity ever since. The talk traces the development of an appropriate setting from the first Tea rooms to the development of Tea houses and their gardens, using images from paintings and photographs. It then looks at how this aesthetic was incorporated into the Tea bowls and utensils used for the ceremony itself.
